Rounded Rectangular Callout: Good food and drink, great sights. Whats not to like??
Who is Robin Curry?

I was born and raised in the USA and traveled very little as a child. Seems  Midwesterners just didn't get out too much back then, probably because flying was more expensive than it is now, even without adjusting for inflation. It cost $600 to go to NY-London in the 70's - when gas was a quarter a gallon!

After college, I'm working as a Project Engineer for a large corporation and needed to make a solo business trip to southern Spain. The 10 days I spent in one coastal city  made a big impression on me how different, but not necessarily better or worse, the rest of the world could be. It became obvious that reading about other places and looking at pictures pales in comparison to actually visiting, and I wanted to see more. But I needed to change careers.

Fast forward through the next 20 years of extensive European exploration (see Q and A below), during which time I became convinced that everyone would benefit from a visit to the "old world", and I set out to do something about it. I founded  Mature Travelers Network, a non profit corporation dedicated to facilitating travel for senior Americans in 1999 and in 2002 I started personally guiding small groups around Europe.

I guarantee that stress goes away and a relaxing, rewarding, fun vacation emerges when you have me, A Friend in Europe, show  you around.

A little Q and A...

Most underrated city - Oslo, Norway. Beautiful setting surrounded by trees and water, with a long maritime history and great museums. The Nobel Peace prize is awarded here

Most overrated city - Geneva, Switzerland. Its probably a nice place to live if you are on an expense account, but I wouldn't recommend visiting there. Get on a boat and get out of town

Favorite city for food - San Sebastian, northern Spain. Totally tapas, all the time (my mouth waters as I write this - no kidding). Second - a taverna on any small Greek island

Favorite beer - Pilsner on tap in Prague. Its good and cheap. Second - (tie) the exotic fruit flavored beer from Belgium or English "real ale" that's pumped up from the cellar

Favorite wine - A small glass of smooth aged Port on a crisp evening, preferably in Portugal, where the selection is huge. Second - The house wine where ever I'm at in France or Italy. Remember, when in Rome....

Favorite outdoor activity - Ride a bike down the fine riverside bike paths of the Danube or the Rhine and then catch a riverboat back. Second - Any mountain hiking that involves taking a lift or tram up and hiking down, the higher the better

Favorite Castle - Chateau Chillion near Lausanne, Switzerland. Arrive by boat for the best effect. Second - does the Alhambra in Granada, Spain count?

Favorite Museum -British Museum, London. Been there more than any other museum in the world and I still look  forward to visiting. Second -  Deutsches Technology Museum, Munich. Young and old enjoy this museum but engineers will want to buy a yearly pass

If I had just a one day vacation - I would spend it wandering around Paris, stimulating my brain. Second - hiking way up the alps in Switzerland on a fall day to clear my brain of stimulus

What most American tourists do but probably shouldn't waste their time - Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. You can see a changing  with less crowds and hassle in a lot of other places.

What American tourists don't do but should  - spend some time in Stockholm. This is a very livable place on many islands, with proud people and beautiful surroundings. You can take a boat to work; how cool is that? The perfectly preserved Vasa warship is a world class sight.
