The European Union (EU) is a collection of cultures following the same economic rules. When the EU adds countries, it brings more cultural diversity into the reach of the common traveler by normalizing border crossings and providing a common currency, but this in itself does not dilute the history and uniqueness of a particular area. They still eat dinner at 11pm in Spain, go to church (a lot) in Italy, Yodel in the Alps, love their wine in France and drive fast in Germany. Now days, and the local subcultures are more determined than ever to preserve their legacy so the next time you get the chance to attend a fall harvest festival, witness (or maybe attempt) a traditional Greek dance or simply listen to the story of how the chocolate you just bought was made, consider it time well spent. Paris and London are great, but what about Rome, Berlin, Venice, Prague, Amsterdam, Brugge, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Lisbon, Stockholm, the seashore around the continent, the Alps in the middle and all the towns in between? From Oslo to Athens, all fine destinations, all covered by A Friend In Europe. Consider these tried and true itineraries that show off
some the great sights of Europe. Call or email for a more complete list of
what's included (and its a lot), or let me know what you want to
see, and I will make it happen. Italian Boot Loop - Rome/ Florence/ Venice/Naples (Sorrento/Amalfi coast). About 10 days by train - get a sleeping compartment for the Venice-Naples trip for an added thrill. See the Colosseum and the Forum, the Vatican and St Peters, Michelangelos David, Pompeii, a night or two in romantic Venice and relaxing Sorrento. Maybe a hill town or a little swim in the Med if we have time. Bavarian Crème Tour - Munich/Neuschwanstein (Disney castle)/Salzburg. 7 to 10 days by train. Enjoy life in clean and happy Munich with its wonderful pedestrian zone and great museums, and then visit Dachau for a downer. On to Fussen for a couple nights to let us see "mad" King Ludwigs castles and then over to Mozart's Salzburg for that "the hill's are alive" feeling and an easy riverside path provides a great bike ride to an ancient salt mine, if you want some exercise (commuter train if you don't). Spanish Spin - Madrid/Toledo/Segovia/Granada/El Escorial. 7 to 10 days, train and luxury bus. Tour the Prado, one of the worlds greatest painting museums (I like it better than the Louvre) then stay up late while munching on Tapas around town, before heading to Segovia to see the Aqueduct, El Escorial with its old capital, and then Toledo and its narrow streets that have captivated famous and commoner alike for many years. Top it off with Granadas spectacular Alhambra, on of Europe's most popular sights. Edgy Eastern Excursion -
Berlin/Prague/Budapest/Vienna. 10 to 14 days by train. Fly into Berlin, the
largest city in continental Europe. Check out Checkpoint Charlie and the
nearby Museum of the Wall. See the 2nd century B.C. Pergamon altar and the
really old Babylonian Ishtar Gate in their museum, then 3000 year old Nefertiti
in the Egyptian museum. Train down to the best preserved (no WWII bomb damage)
big city in Europe, Prague, for a concert, an excellent beer and youthful vibe.
Another train trip brings you into classy Vienna - I think everyone owns a tux
here. See the opera house, Schonbrunn Palace and the fantastic collections
the Habsburg empire assembled. Swing into Budapest for a thermal
bath to help you absorb this exotic and rebounding city, 100 years after its
peak and 15 years after its reintroduction to the west.
